Happy August Greetings!

Yes, the heat tells us we are in the dog days of Summer! What mid-August tells us is that Autumn is around the corner - and hopefully soon maybe a little relief in the weather.

September brings our annual training event at UNF! We hope you can make it this year as we have some excellent topics and great presenters. You also will hear from our new vice president of education and community engagement at the closing session. We want this experience to be inspirational and educational.

It's not too early to let you know that our Parking Lot Extravaganza will be held on Saturday, November 3. We are looking for vendors and sponsors for this event which benefits our Pet Peace of Mind program.

This newsletter is my opportunity to say "thank you" for your volunteer service to Community Hospice & Palliative Care. Thank you for choosing our organization with which to volunteer. You are a great blessing to our patients, their families, as well as the various departments we serve.

Volunteer Spotlight: Pet Therapy Team Benny Roo & Cindi Van Vleck

"Benny Roo, one of our wonderful pet therapy dogs, tries to look all tough in his biker get-up, but there's not a tough or rough bone in his body," states volunteer coordinator, Celeste Pattee.

Benny Roo's team partner is Volunteer Cindi Van Vleck. Thank you both for sharing your compassion and time with our patients and their families at the Acosta-Rua Center for Caring.

Save the Date for our Annual Volunteer Training Event on September 20, 2018

The volunteer services department will host the Annual Volunteer Training event on Thursday, September 20 at the University Center at the University of North Florida. The schedule is as follows:

9:30 a.m.: Registration
10 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Choose two continuing education topics to attend
12 p.m.: Lunch and closing session with guest speaker Jim Monahan, vice president of education and community engagement at Community Hospice & Palliative Care

Transportation is available from the following designated locations: Orange Park, Acosta-Rua, Hadlow, St. Augustine and Fernandina Beach.

Volunteers at Whitey's Fish Camp

A big THANK YOU to all who volunteered at Whitey's Fish Camp this Summer!

The annual Workin' Man's Bass Tournament runs through August 30. At the end of the season, the Community Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation will be presented with a donation from this year's event. Look for an update in September to see how much was raised this summer to support our compassionate care. We greatly appreciate the time and effort from our wonderful volunteers. You make this annual event a success and we couldn't do it without you!

Give and Go

Cheer on the home team as the Jaguar's compete against the NFL's best and show your support for Community PedsCare® by participating in the Give and Go program. Presented by the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida, this annual fundraising campaign gives you the opportunity to purchase great seats for regular season Jaguar games at TIAA Bank Field, while helping support comprehensive palliative and hospice care for our young patients and families.

For tickets, click the link below, select Community Hospice & Palliative Care as your nonprofit of choice and $10/ticket purchased will be donated to Community PedsCare. Once Community Hospice & Palliative Care sells 25 tickets, $20/ticket is donated and if we can sell 100 tickets, Community PedsCare will receive $30/ticket. That's $3,000 to support the children and families in our program! Tickets are limited so purchase early!

Pet Peace of Mind/Pet Therapy Corner

Pets Available for Adoption

As you know, Pet Peace of Mind provides an opportunity for you to help us with the pet needs of our patients. Since starting this program in 2014, we have provided (204) services for the dogs and cats of our patients, and adopted out (37) dogs and (32) cats.

Currently, we have seven cats and one dog that need a furr-ever home.

If you are interested or know someone interested in adopting or fostering one or more of these pets, please contact Chris Whitney at CWhitney@communityhospice.com or 904.407.5204.

Parking Lot Extravaganza: November 3, 2018

It is not too soon to start planning for the annual Pet Peace of Mind Fundraiser on Saturday, November 3.

We are looking for vendors and sponsors. If you know of possible sources, please contact Chris Whitney.
Donations can be dropped off at the storage unit next to the Neviaser Educational building at 4266 Sunbeam Road starting on September 11
Drop off times include 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. on Tuesday evenings and on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. ( Note: Times may be subject to change, so please contact Chris before making a donation.)

New Volunteer Meal Assistant Program

We are excited to announce that Community Hospice & Palliative Care is adding a new volunteer opportunity called "Meal Assistant Volunteers." This opportunity will target patients who live in long-term care facilities and who have uncomplicated feeding needs. Training for this opportunity will consist of two 4-hour sessions over two days. If you are interested in learning more about this program, please contact Nicole Reed, special programs volunteer coordinator, at NReed@communityhospice.com or call 904.738.9330.
