What specific programs of Community Hospice need volunteers?
Auxiliary of Community Hospice
Founded in 1991, the Auxiliary of Community Hospice is a service organization comprised of men and women, aged 18 and older, who share a common interest in supporting the patient care activities of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. Their mission is to:
- Support Community Hospice through fundraising activities
- Provide support to patients and their families
- Provide educational opportunities to Auxiliary members
- Encourage fellowship and build friendships among Auxiliary members
For more information, call the Auxiliary president at 904.268.0803.
Camp Healing Powers
Camp Healing Powers is a weekend camp designed to help young people cope with the death of a loved one. The camp, a program of Community Hospice, helps children honor those who have died, acknowledge sadness or pain and move toward reconciliation and renewal. Camps are held throughout the year for children ages seven to 17. The camps are open to all children, regardless of whether or not their loved one was a Community Hospice patient. Community PedsCare
Community PedsCare is a pediatric palliative and hospice care program for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. A program of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, in collaboration with Wolfson Children's Hospital, Nemours Children's Clinic and University of Florida, Community PedsCare offers individualized support, comfort and care to these children and their families. Complementary Care
Community Hospice's Complementary Care program offers services such as gentle touch, hand massage, relaxation exercises, and music. These holistic therapies treat the entire person – mind, body and spirit – and can provide the patient with many benefits including relaxation, decreased pain, better response to medications, more restful sleep, reduced anxiety, and an overall sense of calm. For more information, call 904.407.7064. Click here to see a schedule of upcoming training opportunities.
Memory Bear Workshops
Come join a Community Hospice volunteer who will teach you how to make a Memory Bear. A Memory Bear is a special teddy bear made from a loved one's clothing. If you are interested in participating in a workshop, call 904.407.7064. Click here to see a schedule of upcoming workshops.
Pet Therapy
Medical personnel nationwide are beginning to accept and encourage pets visiting patients in hospitals, nursing homes and hospice facilities. Studies have shown that a pet therapy animal's presence lowers a patient's blood pressure, decreases stress and anxiety and decreases requests for pain medication. Community Hospice is expanding its pet therapy program. We are looking for a few good "teams" (one human and one well-mannered dog) who would like to visit patients in their homes, at long-term care and assisted living facilities and at the Earl B. Hadlow and George and Margaret Morris centers. For more information, call 904.407.7064. Click here to see a schedule of upcoming training opportunities.
Speakers Bureau
If you enjoy speaking in front of a group of people and are passionate about hospice and end-of-life care, consider joining Community Hospice's Speakers Bureau. After being trained in presentation skills, Ambassador volunteers visit various community groups throughout Northeast Florida to share information on topics related to hospice care, advance directives and grief and loss. For more information, call 904.407.7064.
Spiritual Care
Compassionate care means considering not just the physical needs of patients and families, but also their spiritual needs. Though each of our care teams has a chaplain, our volunteer chaplains provide additional support. Specialized training in Community Hospice's philosophy of spiritual care is required. If you are interested in learning more, call 904.407.7064. Click here to see a schedule of upcoming training opportunities.
Other opportunities include:

- Adopting a family or participating in holiday projects
- Knitting or quilting a blanket/shawl
