Community Hospice Announces New Board Members

JACKSONVILLE, Florida - Community Hospice of Northeast Florida announces the following additions to its Board of Directors:

 

Barbara Darby currently serves as president of Florida Community College (FCCJ) at Jacksonville’s North Campus, but has previously served the college in a variety of roles from professor of nursing to dean of instruction.  Her education includes a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Florida as well as a master’s degree in education from Florida A & M and a doctorate in education from the University of North Florida.  Darby also lends her time to a variety of groups including the Mayor’s Citizens Planning Advisory Committee, the Jacksonville Women’s Network, PACE Center for Girls, the Jacksonville Urban League and the National African-American Women’s Leadership Institute.  She has received many awards including the Gateway Girl Scout Council’s Women of Distinction, the Women of Courage and Vision Award from the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women, and Leadership Jacksonville’s Community Trustee Award.  Darby resides on the Northside.

 

Scott Whalen is the president and CEO of St. Vincent’s HealthCare.  Prior to joining St. Vincent’s in 2006 as executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO), he served as COO of Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus, Ohio where he led a financial and operational turnaround of more than $16 million that included improvements in operations and a “Six Sigma” initiative that led to $5 million in savings.  Whalen holds a Ph.D. in medical science/microbiology from Medical College of Ohio as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology from Bowling Green State University.  He is a member of the Rotary Club of Jacksonville and Leadership Jacksonville and is committed to being an active part of the Jacksonville community.  He makes his home on Jacksonville’s Westside.

 

Established in 1979 as the first hospice program in Northeast Florida, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida helps nearly 1,000 patients live better with advanced illness each day in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties, through the support of more than 700 employees and nearly 900 volunteers. The nonprofit organization has served more than 48,000 children and adults—at home, in long term care facilities, hospitals and through four inpatient centers throughout Jacksonville. Community Hospice Foundation generates philanthropic and community support for unfunded and under-funded programs, including indigent hospice care, Community PedsCare, a pediatric palliative and hospice program, and the programs and services of the Charles M. Neviaser Educational Institute. Care is available to all patients who need it, regardless of their ability to pay.
