Latest News: Community Hospice of Northeast Florida Names New Inpatient Facility to Serve Beaches Area JACKSONVILLE, Florida - Community Hospice of Northeast Florida’s newest inpatient facility, currently under construction on the Mayo Clinic campus, will be dedicated through a gift from the Donald C. McGraw Foundation. The center will be known as the Anne and Donald McGraw Center for Caring. "The donation by the McGraw family will allow Community Hospice to provide end-of-life care and an improved quality of life for families in southern Duval County, the Beaches area and northern St. Johns County for decades to come," said Susan Ponder-Stansel, president and CEO of Community Hospice. "We are honored that the McGraws have chosen such a significant way to demonstrate their support of hospice care and our community." Donald C. McGraw Jr., who died on June 11, 2006, was a WW II Navy veteran and an executive with McGraw-Hill Inc., the global financial and information services company founded by his grandfather, James McGraw. An avid sailor, Donald McGraw started Nautical Quarterly and owned Soundings Publications, as well as a fleet of watercraft throughout his life. He was married for more than 50 years to Anne Schuyler Williams McGraw, an elementary school teacher, hospital and Junior League volunteer and active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Osterville, MA., until her death on December 22, 1999. Together they had four sons: Donald III "Josh" of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Robert L.W., of Sheffield, MA, David W. of Osterville, MA, and Peter S. (deceased) of San Rafael, CA, as well as thirteen grandchildren. The three surviving sons have generously chosen to memorialize their parents with a seven-figure gift to Community Hospice, through the Donald C. McGraw Foundation, which was started by their grandfather, Donald Sr. "Both of my parents received hospice care during the end of their lives, as did my father-in-law and younger brother," says Josh McGraw, president of the Donald C. McGraw Foundation. "So my brothers and I have first-hand experience with the importance of this kind of care for patients and their families." He also noted that: "My parents very strongly believed that ‘for those to whom much is given, much is required’ and they embodied that philosophy through their philanthropy. Naming this hospice inpatient for them is a fitting way to acknowledge their legacy of giving." A Jacksonville resident for more than 15 years, Josh McGraw formerly served as regional vice president of Clear Channel Television and past president of Clear Channel Jacksonville, as well as a past chairman of the Florida Association of Broadcasters. He currently serves on the board of the I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless, the board of Trustees for The Bolles School, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville Leadership Council, and the board of Overseers for the Roger Williams University in Rhode Island. The McGraw Center for Caring will open to patients in Fall 2007. The 23,000-square-foot facility includes 16 inpatient beds in private rooms in a unique homelike setting, complete with gardens, screened-in porches and ponds. Visitors will have 24-hour access. Overnight stays by loved ones are encouraged, as are short visits by family pets. Established in 1979 as the first hospice program in northeast Florida, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida provides compassionate care to nearly 1,000 patients daily in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties, through the support of more than 700 employees and 1,100 volunteers. The nonprofit organization has served more than 38,000 children and adults-at home, in long-term care facilities, hospitals and through its two inpatient facilities in Jacksonville. Community Hospice Foundation generates philanthropic and community support for unfunded and under-funded programs, including indigent hospice care, programs and services through the Charles M. Neviaser Educational Institute, and Community PedsCare, a pediatric palliative and hospice program. Care is available to all patients who need it, regardless of their ability to pay. # # #
