Community Hospice Announces Establishment of Living Through Giving Scholarship Program

JACKSONVILLE, Florida - Community Hospice of Northeast Florida is pleased to announce the establishment of the Living Through Giving Scholarship Program.

The scholarship has been established for students who have had an experience with hospice and/or a loss in their immediate family. One scholarship will be awarded in each of the following four (4) categories:

  • Liberal Arts - A student matriculating at Edwards Waters College
  • Health care - A student in the nursing program at Florida Community College at Jacksonville
  • Arts - A student attending Douglas Anderson or the LaVilla School of the Arts
  • Higher Education - A high school senior who has participated in Community Hospice's Camp Healing Powers, a camp for grieving children conducted by Community Hospice

Eligible students must reside in Community Hospice's five-county service area - Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau or St. Johns counties and must be African American. A completed application, official transcript and letter of recommendation must be postmarked no later than July 31, 2006 and submitted to:

Living Through Giving scholarship applications are available on the Community Hospice web site at www.communityhospice.com or by calling Marietta LeBlanc at 904.407.6176.

Each scholarship will be in the amount of $1,000 and awarded for one year only. Winning applicants will be notified by August 31, 2006. The presentation of scholarships will take place during the Living Through Giving Gala, Saturday, September 9, 2006, at the Ritz Theatre & LaVilla Museum, 829 North Davis Street, in downtown Jacksonville.

Established in 1979 as the first hospice program in northeast Florida, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida provides compassionate care to nearly1,000 patients daily in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties, through the support of more than 700 employees and 1,100 volunteers. The nonprofit organization has served more than 38,000 children and adults-at home, in long-term care facilities, hospitals and through its two inpatient facilities in Jacksonville. Community Hospice Foundation generates philanthropic and community support for unfunded and under-funded programs, including indigent hospice care, programs and services through the Charles M. Neviaser Educational Institute, and Community PedsCare, a pediatric palliative and hospice program. Care is available to all patients who need it, regardless of their ability to pay.
