Gift of Emmett Fritz Painting Made to Community Hospice

ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida - Community Hospice of Northeast Florida recently received a gift from St. Augustine resident Mrs. Franklin M. Persons of a painting by famed St. Augustine artist Emmett Fritz. Mrs. Persons donated the Fritz painting in memory of her husband who had been a patient at the Community Hospice Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring located at 4266 Sunbeam Road in Mandarin.

The size and subject matter of the Emmett Fritz painting are very unique. Fritz normally painted St. Augustine scenes on sunny days. The painting given to Community Hospice shows St. George Street after the rain.

The painting will hang in the new 10,000-square-foot wing of the Hadlow Center that opened for patients on January 7. The new patient care wing includes 12 private patient rooms overlooking a peaceful pond. It also includes a family gathering area, sun porch and counseling rooms. St. Augustine interior designer Tara Regan created an interior setting in the new wing that complements the current home-like atmosphere found at the Hadlow Center.

"As a St. Augustine resident, I am thrilled to have our very own little piece of St. George Street in the Hadlow Center. It helps our St. Augustine patients feel at home while residing at the Hadlow Center," stated Susan Ponder-Stansel, president and CEO of Community Hospice.

Built in 1995, the Hadlow Center is a 38-bed facility owned and operated by Community Hospice. It is located approximately two miles north of the Avenues Mall, just off Philips Highway (US 1). An estimated 150 St. Augustine residents have stayed at the facility to receive care since 2000.

Established in 1979, as the first hospice program in the area, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida has served more than 34,000 children and adults at home, in long-term care facilities, hospitals and at The Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring in Mandarin and The George and Margaret Morris Center for Caring on the Northside. The nonprofit organization currently has more than 600 employees providing compassionate, dignified care to more than 900 patients in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties in Florida. Community Hospice of St. Johns County is funded in part by the United Way of St. Johns County. The local Community Hospice office is located at 525 State Road 16, Suite 112, in St. Augustine.
