Community Hospice Plans New Inpatient Facility On Mayo Clinic Campus

JACKSONVILLE, Florida – Community Hospice of Northeast Florida announced their plans to build a new 23,000 square foot, 16-bed inpatient facility to serve the Southside and Beaches areas on Mayo Clinic's Jacksonville campus. Community Hospice and Mayo Clinic have agreed upon a long-term lease agreement on approximately four acres. Terms of the 40-year agreement include a prepaid lease payment of $1.2 million. Community Hospice will break ground on the Beaches Center for Caring at Mayo Clinic in the summer of 2006, with completion anticipated mid-year 2007.

The new inpatient facility, which will cost approximately $7.5 million to construct, will include 16 private patient rooms surrounded by wooded acreage and a pond. The inpatient facility will also include family gathering areas, sun porches, doctor's offices and grief counseling rooms. The new facility will house both new and existing staff offering round-the-clock care, with a projected 45 new jobs created.

"We are very excited about this agreement with Mayo Clinic and are so grateful that they have given us this opportunity to such an ideal site for our Beaches Center for Caring," said Susan Ponder-Stansel, Community Hospice's president and chief executive officer. "We look forward to working with Mayo Clinic and other healthcare providers in our community to provide quality, end-of-life care to the patients and families in this part of our service area."

"The construction of this facility on our campus is a natural extension of our collaborations – in patient care, education, and research–with Community Hospice of Northeast Florida," stated George Bartley, M.D., chief executive officer of Mayo Clinic Jacksonville.

In the past five years, Community Hospice has more than tripled the number of patients served and the need for additional beds is critical. The Beaches Center for Caring will be the fourth inpatient facility for Community Hospice. In addition to the two existing facilities – the Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring in Mandarin and the George and Margaret Morris Center for Caring at Shands Jacksonville – a third facility is currently under construction on Jacksonville's Westside with plans for a fifth facility to serve patients and families in St. Augustine.

"Community Hospice cares for nearly 1,000 patients daily and up to 10 percent of those patients will need to spend some of their time in a hospice inpatient bed. We are thrilled to be able to provide this critically needed inpatient care on Mayo Clinic's campus," said Ponder-Stansel.

The architect for the expansion is TTV Architects with Auld & White serving as the contractor.

Established in 1979 as the first hospice program in northeast Florida, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida provides compassionate care to nearly 1,000 patients daily in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties, through the support of more than 700 employees and 1,100 volunteers. The nonprofit organization has served more than 38,000 children and adults – at home, in long-term care facilities, hospitals and through its two inpatient facilities in Jacksonville.
