'Ladybugs' Bring Holiday Joy to Community Hospice Patients

Jacksonville, Fla. - Patients and staff of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida were treated to holiday cheer in the form of Christmas carols, thanks to some special young ladies of the Ladybug Club. The Ladybugs, girls ages 5 to 11, are a nonprofit “kids helping kids” group who perform service projects in Jacksonville throughout the year.

The group of 16 Ladybugs and their leader, Angie Nicely Fliess, walked and sang through the halls of Community Hospice’s inpatient center, the Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring, as well as caroled at a Community PedsCare patient’s home. Community PedsCare is Community Hospice’s pediatric program for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.

The girls sang yuletide favorites, including “Here comes Santa Claus” and “Jingle Bells.”

“It really brightened the day for many of our patients—and staff—who enjoyed listening to the songs and seeing the children,” said Susan Ponder-Stansel, president and CEO of Community Hospice.

In addition to caroling, the Ladybugs donated gifts to a Community PedsCare family whose father experienced recent cutbacks to his hours at work. Because of the Ladybugs’ generosity, the parents now will be able to provide Christmas presents for their children. During the year, the Ladybugs have given other items and books to the Community PedsCare program.
