Latest News: Community Hospice Welcomes New Clinical and Business Development Leadership Jacksonville, Fla. - Community Hospice of Northeast Florida has named new leaders for its medical, nursing, and business development operations. Stephen J. Clark, M.D., recently joined Community Hospice as chief medical officer, and Mary McElroy, RN, MS, joined the organization as chief nursing officer. Felisa Savage was named director of business development. Dr. Clark joined Community Hospice after more than 25 years as a family physician and practice owner in Jacksonville. In his role as chief medical officer, he oversees the medical programs and services provided to nearly 1,000 Community Hospice patients each day by a team of 17 associate medical directors and advanced registered nurse practitioners. He also is responsible for monitoring qualitative and quantitative practice standards to ensure the highest quality care for all patients, and for reaching out to community healthcare providers to communicate the benefits of hospice and palliative medicine. Prior to joining Community Hospice, Dr. Clark was owner and CEO of Family Practice Associates of Jacksonville, P.A., and had previously served as CEO of Premier Family Care, a 30-physician primary care group. He also has served in medical leadership at Memorial Hospital Jacksonville, as chair of its Leadership Organizational Council and Credentials Committee. He earned his medical degree from the University of Arkansas and completed a family medicine residency through the University of Florida’s Jacksonville Health Education Program at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. He is a board-certified family medicine practitioner and member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Florida Academy of Family Physicians, with whom he has held several leadership positions. A former Community Hospice board member, McElroy previously served as chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Nursing Services at Memorial Hospital, where she spent more than 30 years in a variety of nursing and management capacities. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Villanova University and a master’s degree in administration and health services from Central Michigan University. In 2003, she was honored as one of the Great 100 Nurses of Northeast Florida. At Community Hospice, McElroy oversees all nursing functions, including inpatient, home care, continuous home care, long term care, triage and nursing services administration. Her responsibilities span program, financial and operational management of these areas, including establishing and monitoring quality of care, practice standards, regulatory compliance and all nursing-related policies and procedures. “New state and federal requirements and increased regulations now apply to hospice and palliative care,” McElroy said. “As a leader and innovator in end-of-life care, Community Hospice has embraced these changes and also implemented efforts to enhance the quality of patient care.” The leadership responsibilities of these two new executives are structured to directly affect patient care. “Quality of care has always been our foremost priority at Community Hospice. The addition of these two highly experienced and dedicated clinical executives will assure that we will have excellence in the services that we provide to our patients and their families,” said President and CEO Susan Ponder-Stansel. As director of business development, Savage guides the sales and marketing activities of a team of 10 healthcare relations representatives, who coordinate outreach efforts and ensure that community physicians and healthcare providers at hospitals, and long term care and assisted living facilities are satisfied with Community Hospice services for their patients. Prior to her current position, Savage was a North Florida district sales manager for PDI Inc. and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, and manager of contracting for Mission:Health. She earned a Master of Health Administration degree from the University of North Florida. Established in 1979 as the first community-based, nonprofit hospice program in Northeast Florida, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida helps nearly 1,000 patients live better with advanced illness each day in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties, through the support of more than 700 employees and nearly 900 volunteers.
