Latest News: Community Hospice & Flagler Hospital Break Ground On Bailey Family Hospice Center for St. Johns County St. Augustine, Fla. - Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and Flagler Hospital broke ground today on a new state-of-the-art hospice inpatient care center to be built on the Flagler Hospital campus in St. Augustine. "This center has been dedicated through a gift from the Gay and Mark Bailey family of St. Augustine and will be known as the Bailey Family Center for Caring,” noted Community Hospice President and CEO Susan Ponder-Stansel, during the ceremonial groundbreaking on the site, which is currently the physician’s parking lot on Flagler Hospital’s campus.
“Community Hospice is partnering with Flagler Hospital to construct this 11,000 square-foot addition to our current facility just west of the main entrance,” said Flagler Hospital President Joseph Gordy. “Community Hospice will have a long-term lease for this space to house its inpatient center.” The new hospice inpatient unit will serve the short-term, acute end-of-life care needs for residents of St. Augustine and St. Johns County. It will include 12 private patient rooms, staff offices, as well as family gathering areas, chapel, kitchen and lounge areas for use by family members and employees. Community Hospice medical staff, nurses, certified nursing assistants, social service specialists and spiritual counselors will provide 24-hour care, seven days a week in a unique homelike setting, complete with gardens and walkways. Construction will cost approximately $5 million and is being funded by a Community Hospice capital campaign currently under way.
"The fact that we are more than 70% of the way to our capital campaign goal illustrates the strong support for this center” noted Mark Bailey, who is chairing the capital campaign committee. “We are confident that this level of financial support will continue as we invite everyone in our community to support the capital campaign.” "With support from the community and through our partnership with Flagler Hospital, Community Hospice is able to strengthen the continuum of care we provide for St. Johns County residents,” said Ponder-Stansel. "This inpatient center has been a dream of ours for many years—driven by the desires expressed by community members and a demonstrated need for this unique type of care." Flagler Hospital and Community Hospice anticipate construction of the new inpatient center to be completed by late 2010 or early 2011.
