Latest News: Community Hospice Announces New Medical Directors For Pediatrics JACKSONVILLE, Florida - Community Hospice of Northeast Florida is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeffrey Goldhagen, M.D., M.P.H., as the new program director and Kelly Komatz, M.D., M.P.H., as the new associate medical director for Community PedsCare, a pediatric palliative and hospice program for children with life-threatening conditions. The Community PedsCare program was established in 2000 by Community Hospice in collaboration with Wolfson Children’s Hospital, Nemours Children’s Clinic, and the University of Florida. Dr. Goldhagen will be responsible for program development and administration of the team that serves Community PedsCare patients. He is an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Florida/Jacksonville and chief of the Division of Community Pediatrics. He has experience in domestic and international child health; urban, community and maternal and child health; the core functions of public health; health care administration; and in children’s rights and child advocacy. Dr. Goldhagen received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and trained in Pediatrics and Public Health at the University of Minnesota. He is a member and plays a leadership role in many regional and national organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Komatz will provide medical oversight of the interdisciplinary team and handle the day-to-day clinical care of Community PedsCare patients. She is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Florida/Jacksonville, and is board certified in pediatrics, and served as an active duty physician in the Navy from 1988 to 1996. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Komatz completed her pediatric residency at Naval Medical Command Northwest Region, Oak Knoll Naval Hospital, Oakland, California. Her perinatal/neonatology fellowship was performed at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dr. Komatz is a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and the National Board of Medical Examiners. Community PedsCare currently provides palliative and hospice care and support to nearly 100 children who are living with life-threatening illnesses, diseases or injuries. The program provides care to eligible children, regardless of their ability to pay for the care needed.
Established in 1979 as the first hospice program in Northeast Florida, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida helps nearly 1,000 patients live better with advanced illness each day in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties, through the support of more than 700 employees and nearly 900 volunteers. The nonprofit organization has served more than 48,000 children and adults—at home, in long term care facilities, hospitals and through four inpatient centers throughout Jacksonville. Community Hospice Foundation generates philanthropic and community support for unfunded and under-funded programs, including indigent hospice care, Community PedsCare, a pediatric palliative and hospice program, and the programs and services of the Charles M. Neviaser Educational Institute. Care is available to all patients who need it, regardless of their ability to pay. ###
