What do I need to discuss with my health care surrogate?
Ask these questions of the person you are considering as your health care surrogate:
- Will you be my health care surrogate and make medical decisions on my behalf when illness or injury keeps me from making them for myself?
- Will you be able to make decisions in accordance with my wishes, even if you don't agree with them?
- Are you willing to advocate for me?
- Will you be prepared to talk to medical professionals and ask doctors for more information when you need it to understand what's happening?
- Will you be prepared to change a medical decision you've made for me if a treatment doesn't benefit me as expected?
