Talk About End-of-life Care

How do I talk to loved ones about end-of-life care?

It's not easy to bring up issues about death and dying. Chances are, your family and friends won't want to talk or even think about what will happen at the end of your life. One way to begin the conversation is to let them know why you want to talk – perhaps because you're preparing your will, advance directives, or a particular event in your family or in the news is prompting you to think about these issues.

Here are a few things to consider and discuss with your loved ones:

  • Define what "quality of life" means to you and what gives your life meaning.
  • Tell them how you would feel about giving up your physical independence or having to leave your home.
  • Share your spiritual beliefs that affect your preferences for end-of-life care.
  • Express your fears and concerns about dying.

Ask your family members for their thoughts:

  • Knowing my wishes, will you honor them even if you don't agree with them?
  • Will you look for information about my illness and what to expect as my illness progresses?
  • Can we talk openly about our relationships and any unresolved issues between us?
  • Will you take care of yourselves as you care for me?
