May 2008 General Volunteer Training - More Info The following training sessions will be held at the Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville: Map Saturday, May 10, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 6 – 9 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The following training sessions will be held at the Dr. Gaston J. Acosta-Rua Center for Caring, 5450 Ramona Boulevard, Jacksonville: Map Tuesday, May 13, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Friday, May 16, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Office/clerical volunteers must attend the first day of training. Do you enjoy meeting people at events or speaking in front of groups? Sign up for this two-day training session where you'll participate in fun exercises, learn about the care we give, and gain some valuable presentation tips. Living With Grief: Children and Adolescents Thursday, May 15, 9 a.m. – noon, St. Johns County School District Administration Building, 40 Orange Street, St. Augustine Map Community Hospice is presenting a pre-recorded national webcast to focus on the experience of grieving children and adolescents and the ways that hospice professionals and caregivers can best support them. An on-site panel of experts will provide a local perspective on children's grief issues. Continuing education credit will be available to nurses, nursing assistants, and licensed mental health and social service professionals. The event is free and open to the public. Fourth Annual A Sunset in Costa Rica Thursday, May 15, 6 p.m., The Terrace Suites at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, 1400 East Duval Street, Jacksonville Map Mark your calendars for a "Rainforest Rendezvous" of hors d'oeuvres, cocktails and dancing to benefit children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions at Fundacion Pro-Unidad Cuidado Paliativo in Costa Rica and Community PedsCare in Jacksonville. A Sunset in Costa Rica is presented by The Acosta-Rua Family Foundation and Community Hospice Foundation. Tickets are $75 for ages 32 years and younger and $125 for ages 33 years and older. Camp Healing Powers Friday, May 16-Sunday, May 18, Camp Marywood Retreat and Conference Center, northern St. Johns County Community Hospice's Camp Healing Powers is a therapeutic camp experience for children who are grieving the death of a loved one. Designed by bereavement specialists, the camp creates a safe, warm, fun and supportive environment for grieving children. Campers engage in age-specific activities focused on grief education, emotion identification and expression, development of coping skills and maintaining a connection with the loved one. Children between the ages of 7 and 17 may attend camp. The death should have occured between 90 days and two years prior to camp. A $35 deposit reserves a camper's space and is returned upon completion of camp. Pre-camp assessments are necessary for all camp attendees. Church Street, Jacksonville Map This free workshop presented through a partnership with Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Urban Jacksonville, Inc., Mayo Clinic and the Florida Department of Elder Affairs will provide caregivers with tips to help make their lives easier. Topics include coping with stress, spiritual aspects of caregiving, community resources for caregivers and the elderly, end-of-life care, advance directives, legal and financial issues, managing memory disorder behaviors and safety in the home. Keynote speaker Carol D. O'Dell, author of the memoir "Mothering Mother" shares a daughter's story about the struggle to care for an aging parent. Third Annual "Ride for Community Hospice" Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 9 a.m. Magna's Salon, 103 Centre Street, Amelia Island Map This motorcycle ride to benefit Community Hospice of Northeast Florida is a 90-minute scenic ride to Jekyll Island. Candlelight Service of Remembrance - More Info Thursday, June 19, 1 - 2:30 p.m., St. Peters Episcopal Church, 801 Atlantic Avenue, Fernandina Beach Map Community Hospice of Northeast Florida invites you to celebrate the memory of those you have lost this past year.
